Management Wins Via Communication
Knowing communication styles not only of yourself but of your staff, customers and suppliers quickly aids in establishing a trusted relationship.
This small business has an owner, his wife and 4 family members involved. We have identified they need to have regular communication but due to the different communication styles involved there is conflict over how the meetings should be run.
3 of the members have Controller profiles so they each feel they need not only to be in control but also that the meetings are not important and if we must have them to make them short and to the point.
2 of the members have more Analytic profiles so they each feel that they need an idea of what is to be discussed, some background information on it and a clear outline of who/what and when.
The other member is very much a Friend/Entertainer Profile which means they are more concerned with the actually feelings involved in the meeting, not only for others but also for themselves.
The ability to set a clear agenda well in advance with a time limit and a maximum number of points to be covered allowed everyone to participate. The Friend was asked to arrange the meeting room and nibbles – their strength. One of the Analytic profiles was allocating keeping notes – at least they would do it and it would cover everything. The most senior member also was a Controller and put in charge of running the meeting and keeping it to time. They were also able to rotate the chairing of the meeting to ensure everyone learnt new skills.
By explaining and each person recognising the Communication Profile of their team members, they were able to communicate to that person closer to their preferred style. This allows for less confusion and wasted time.
